Weather Forecast 45% open

New Zealand

What data is expected?

3-day forecasts of temperature, precipitation and wind. Forecasts have to be provided for several regions in the country. Short-term weather forecasts are relevant for the general public to plan activities, while also being reliable. See our methodology section for more information.

  • Temperature extremes
  • Temperature average
  • Wind speed
  • Wind direction
  • Precipitation Amount
  • Precipitation Probability
  • Forecast for current day and four following days

How open is the data?

Wind speed, direction and precipitation at https://www.metservice.com/maps-radar/local-observations/local-3-hourly-observations (note 3hr observations report rain in last hour, leaving a gap) Sadly, in their Open Access Data policy MetService have prioritised profitability and efficiency over social responsibility obligations, see https://about.metservice.com/our-company/about-this-site/data-access-policy/

The submission was slightly changed. The review refers to the data available at: https://www.metservice.com/towns-cities/auckland/manukau Downloadable forecast data needs to be paid for, and is only accessible with limitations. Therefore publicly available data was taken as a reference point for the review. This data is available in HTML, shows weather forecast graphs, and is not downloadable. A note on the official status of MetService. "MetService is New Zealand’s designated National Meteorological Service with the World Meteorological Organisation. Under contracts with the Crown, MetService is the authorised provider of warnings and other public safety weather services to the people of New Zealand, as well as certified weather information to the aviation industry and all airlines flying into and within New Zealand." See: https://about.metservice.com/our-company/national-weather-services/ The service provides "Open Access Observational Data" at: https://about.metservice.com/our-company/about-this-site/open-access-data/. This data contains observational data which can be used for any purposed as stated here: https://about.metservice.com/our-company/about-this-site/terms-of-use/ Yet, the open license does not apply to weather models (forecasts) which are handled as "limited access data". Forecast data can be retrieved from a data service page: https://about.metservice.com/our-company/weather-on-your-website/weather-data-packages/. This data has to be paid. Thank you, Jonathan Hunt, for contributing to the Global Open Data Index.
